PALM SUNDAY

A. INTRODUCTION:

Palm Sunday marks Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem, a pivotal moment in Christian history.

B. ORIGIN:

The term "Palm Sunday" originates from Jewish tradition, where palm branches (lulav) are used during Sukkot (Feast of Tabernacles), symbolizing joy and victory. Similarly, the crowd in Luke 19 waved palm branches, hailing Jesus as a king, echoing these symbols of triumph and celebration.

C. MEANING:

Palm Sunday commemorates Jesus' arrival in Jerusalem, showcasing his kingship and humility. He rode a donkey, fulfilling Zechariah's prophecy (Zechariah 9:9), highlighting his peaceful intentions

D. SCRIPTURES:

- Matthew 21:1-11

- Mark 11:1-11

- Luke 19:28-44

- John 12:12-19

E. A LITTLE LIGHT ON: LUKE 19:39-40 RESPONSE FROM JESUS TO THE PHARISEES

Jesus is saying that the praise and worship he's receiving is not just from humans, but is a declaration of God's glory. He's implying that even if humans were to silence the disciples, the very stones would cry out in praise, highlighting the inevitability and magnitude of God's plan. Jesus is emphasizing that his arrival is a fulfillment of prophecy, and the recognition of his kingship is not just a human perspective, but a divine declaration.

The Pharisees' attempt to silence the disciples is futile, as God's glory will be proclaimed regardless. It's a statement about the unstoppable nature of God's plan and the universal recognition of Jesus' lordship.

F. LESSONS:

1. Jesus' kingship and humility

2. Fulfillment of prophecy (Zechariah 9:9)

3. Crowd's reaction: praise vs. skepticism

G. CONCLUSION:

Palm Sunday sets the tone for Holy Week, reminding us of Jesus' mission and sacrifice.
